Placing flowers or
basil at the foot of an icon or around an icon at church is an expression of a person’s
faith.
It can be as an
offering for when someone is in need, but it can simply be out of love and
gratitude. It can also be a sign of thankfulness for something that has
happened or is yet to happen.
If intending to
place flowers at the foot of an icon, place them in a small vase of water so
they will keep for a little while. If only wishing to leave one or two flowers
place them either on the ledge of an icon stand so others can venerate the
icon.
The flowers can be
of any kind, depending on seasonal availability. Some suggestions include St Demetrius,
carnations and roses.
